The weather is heating up, so naturally, you are in summer preparation mode. That means you start actually using your gym membership, trade out your American Apparel leggings and Frye boots for Tory Burch wedges and Ralph Lauren shirt dresses. Next step: go see your colorist to get your coif a few shades lighter. When it comes to color most people know single process and traditional foil highlights, however you do not have to use the foils to go lighter, and in some cases you shouldn't. Enter Hair Painting, a modern form of "balayage" that gives your hair dimensional, natural looking color sans foils. Yes, a stylist literally paints the color onto your hair.
Ok, brief history lesson. The word "balayage" translates to "sweeping" therefore, the colorist actually sweeps color on the hair exactly where they want it. The colorist can place the highlights more exactly where the sun would actually hit your hair. Think back to when you were a kid and you had perfect sun kissed highlights from playing around in the sun. Fast forward to adulthood and your colorist can artificially paint on highlights where the sun hits your hair. I call it the, "I spent a week sunning at San Tropez " hair.
One huge perk of hair painting vs. foils is that the painting requires less maintenance than traditional foils. Your color will last between 6 to 8 weeks and the hair grows out gracefully, thus avoiding obvious roots. Painting is also a great way to subtly brighten your look. Not everyone wants that bright beach blonde hair, but lightening some of the ends to match where the sun hits your hair is a great way to lighten your look for the season. The painting will also work with the natural elements and sun exposure will enhance the tone.
If you are thinking about hair painting, but think that it only works for blondes...you are wrong! Beautiful dark brunettes can add warm honey or caramel tones to lighten their color. The key is to work with your colorist and analyze your natural skin tones and eye color to achieve the most natural looking color for your hair.
